Some of us happen to be legal now, you know. As for the underage folks, I take no responsibility. I bought no one anything that they were not of legal age to consume.

Then you've got nothing to worry about, have you? Just pointing out to the ones that are underage that boasting about hangovers on a public journal is just asking for the sort of moralising shite they've been getting. It is perfectly possible to drink underage and not cause a fuss - Marie-Ange and I used to all the time. ;)

And you aren't being held responsible for anything, least not by me. Fuck, I'd be the last person to talk - I've been drinking since I was 14, and that definitely wasn't responsible.

At least this time the discussion is from one of the teenagers, and not from overzealous staff members?

Maybe the teachers are as sick of the argument as we are? Or there's the whole bit where the drinking was off-campus and the people involved are the school's responsibility any more, since they're all over 18 and adults.

Which is fucked up. You can be considered responsible for yourself and move out of home at 18 here, but you can't drink? Any way, not starting that up again. I've got a bunch of dusty old books from.... um, somewhere on the Russian-Chinese border to catalogue for our library. Doug, I might need you for translating help with a couple of them. Mark is not underage, though. Whatever else happened, whatever decisions were made by underage parties to drink, that was their decision. I do not have much of a fascination with drinking. The legal drinking age in Attilan is sixteen, and I did drink at that age. However, I did so only where it was allowed and have never purchased or consumed alcohol in a country where I had not yet reached the legal age to drink.

My personal opinion is that discussions of consuming alcoholic beverages, whether the people in question are of the proper drinking age or not, is a topic best discussed in private or on a communication system that cannot be read by the students attending Xavier's. Post-it notes aside, some topics are simply not appropriate to be posted and discussed on a journal that can be read by everyone on the shared journal system.

Post-it notes aside, some topics are simply not appropriate to be posted and discussed on a journal that can be read by everyone on the shared journal system.

Problem is, not all of us agree on what's appropriate and what's not. I've been told I shouldn't swear in front of the kids, but considering I use the word 'fuck' as punctuation, it's not an easy thing to remember. I tend to leave it up to the kids themselves to ask me to tone it down. Mark comes from a lifestyle where he does a lot more than just drink, so remembering there's a bunch of under-age kids on the journals who might not be able to deal with the whole drinking concept probably didn't even occur to him.

People are all different, princess. Some of us didn't have the benefit of the lessons in etiquette, and sometimes we screw up. I think my reminder that talking about hangovers = boring debates on underage drinking is probably a bit more effective than lecturing us about what's appropriate or not.

Since when are they so impressionable? If they are so easily swayed by mention of misdeeds then I'm pretty sure their backbones are flexible enough to be swayed by plenty of other convenient scapegoats like music, movies, and pop culture at large.

Sure, points to Laurie for sticking to her opinion, but I think given that the journals are just that we should be allowed to say what we want without a mother hen response from someone just because they disagree.

Really, it's not our fault Doug can't pace himself.

Well, Laurie'll learn soon enough that things are a bit more shades of grey than she seems to right now - joining the leather brigade will be enough to show her that, since a good chunk of what they do could be considered technically illegal - flying around in a private military-class plane, for one. If she gets this bent about a bit of underage drinking, it'll be interesting to see how she reacts to the first time she's with the team and they enter a country illegally to do the heroics.

But it's not worth giving the teachers headaches - or reasons to send us polite little notes asking us to tone it down - to post on the public journals about getting trolleyed every Friday night. Easier to leave it to email and places like this comm.

And see this is why I bring up things like Clarice being evil or mandatory court ordered warnings on my journal, not mentions of my underage drinking as part of a mandatory outing (it's Forge's fault, not mine!).

I guess she'll grow out of it, but I'm sort of amazed she can be that idealistic in general. I mean, how sheltered do you have to be to not realize there's far more fucked up shit going on in the world and that underaged drinking rates pretty low? Maybe that's a bit fucked up for me to say, but me and my gloom cloud just ain't understanding her.

Laurie's a good kid who's been through the wringer lately. My guess is she's trying to hang onto something 'normal'. And believing in the law is about as normal as you can get, I suppose. Very Norman Rockefeller. You'd think after being arrested herself she'd know differently, but it's not like she's had a lot of experience with living outside of the law. And there's part of me that doesn't want to mess with that - I could tell her plenty of stories about London bobbies beating up homeless kids 'cause we were in the way, but I don't want to be the one that messes with that innocent view of the world she has. It'll happen soon enough.

Laurie is the epitome of sheltered. She's had a hard few months. With her being on the team, I dunno how that's going to work for her. It's not a game. And things aren't all hugs and puppies and flowers like she wants them to be. Either she's going to have to accept that and grow the hell up, or we might have problems.
